I responded to a letter some years ago about the dearth of solos for Bb Bass,
by composing a solo for that instrument with brass band, called ‘ALPINE TUBA’.
I then added a version of that solo with piano so that players could try
the solo with piano first, before purchasing the full band arrangement . The
solo is not difficult to play, and is designed to entertain, rather than amaze
people with technical ability. There is a low melodic section of eight bars
in the middle showing the depth of tone of a Bb Bass
Staying with tuba music, there is a new breed of tuba players these days
willing to play technical solos in concert. DANCING TUBA is a solo for the
Eb player with a good range and technique. It is designed as a concert solo
and should please most audiences. Try the solo / piano version first before purchasing
the full band version.
NESSUN DORMA is now published in two versions, a high key, and a lower
key. You will also find both versions now available in the full band arrangements
The OLD KENTUCKY HOME by William Rimmer, one of his most popular Air Varies
was published as an Eb Horn solo over a century ago, but without a Bb version.
I have published a transposed version for Bb instruments with piano - price
£6.50 + £2.00 p&p
TUBA TAMBA requires just a little more effort than Tuba Smarties, but is
an excellent 2nd step solo which should please audiences large or small.
Mike Pegram was a trombonist in the Services, and composed this jazz style
waltz solo for trombone. WISE GUY is one of those solos which requires
the right style of playing, smooth, melodic, to a waltz tempo. The cadenza will
need some care.
