The Lostwithiel Town Band augmented by representatives from 8 other Cornish bands lead the funeral cortege along the main street, and then down Fore Street in the town of Lostwithiel., to the St. Bartholomew Church.
The town band played for the hymns in the memorial service, and then, joined by the other Cornish band members, formed a Guard of Honour for the family coming out of church.
Mervyn Collins died on January 17th 2008 at 84 years of age. Mervyn must be one of the longest serving bandsman in the UK, having played for 74 years, and playing most of the instruments in a brass band, including the old fashioned G Bass Trombone.
He served as secretary to the band for 24 years, before becoming treasurer, which post he kept right up to his demise..
Mervyn was first employed as fireman and driver by the GWR, and later progressed from steam trains to diesel.
